Why should you change the safety cord on your padel racket?

The safety cord is a fundamental element of a padel racket. So much so that the regulations require that all rackets incorporate it and its use during the game. Its function is, obviously, to avoid accidents in case the racket slips in our hand and hits another player.

Replacing the cord: a complex and risky operation
The safety cord on padel rackets is attached to the structure of the racket itself in the inner space of the handle. Replacing it is a complicated operation that involves manipulating the racket, losing the purchase guarantee. To replace it, it is necessary to remove the grip that comes with the racket from the factory until the lower plug is visible, which must also be removed and is attached to the handle of the racket with a system of staples. Removing these staples is a delicate operation that carries a risk of breaking the racket. Once the cord has been replaced, replacing the lower plug is also complicated, since having removed the staples the plug may be poorly fixed and may move during the game. Why might we be interested in replacing the safety cord?

FOR SAFETY
During the game, the safety cord becomes soaked with the player's sweat. Over time, sweat degrades the fibres to the point of breaking. Another possible reason for breakage is if the internal knot that links the cord to the structure of the racket comes undone. In any case, if the cord on our racket is broken, it must be replaced as the regulations do not allow playing without a system for securing the racket to the wrist.

FOR HYGIENE
As we have pointed out previously, the paddle cord is constantly exposed to the player's sweat, producing bad odours over time. In the case of paddle rackets shared by more than one person (for example, test rackets, rental rackets, etc.) the health risk component must be taken into account. In the case of shared rackets, the overgrip of the racket should always be changed and the cord disinfected after each use.
